Funding and support
HEFCE has shown its support of Higher Education libraries by generously granting £9.8 million to UKRR.
HEFCE is not just providing funding for the scheme, but is also a source of valuable support, with a member of HEFCE sitting on the UKRR Board.
"HEFCE is delighted to support this groundbreaking initiative, which aims to safeguard the long-term future of print research journals, provide simple and quick access to research material and make better and more efficient use of space in university libraries. It shows that a creative partnership between the higher education community and the British Library now underpins our national research resources. There are major advantages for universities and colleges to join the UKRR and I urge more to take up this opportunity."
Sir Alan Langlands, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)
The British Library is a key partner in UKRR, retaining the principal copy of the journal and providing access for researchers through it's document supply service and reading rooms.
"By underpinning access to research across higher education in the UK, UKRR will create a stronger, better managed, more efficient and more sustainable national research collection."
Dr Joanna Newman, Head of Higher Education at the British Library
UKRR is supported in the Higher Education community by Research Libraries UK (RLUK), the Research Information Network (RIN) and the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL).
The scheme is being led by Imperial College London.
"The UKRR is a fantastic example of HEFCE, Imperial and the British Library working together to produce a better and more coherent way to access research material. It addresses the problem of libraries up and down the country with duplicate copies of low use periodicals and will offer a more sophisticated approach to providing information to the UK’s research community.”
Deborah Shorley, Director of Library Services, Imperial College London and Head of UKRR
